Wolfman's T-shirt of the Day.
I spent a lot of time with Bob Hoskins when he came to Massachusetts to film Mermaids with Cher and Winona Ryder.
At the time, I was writing a movie about the love affair between a Boston Celtic basketball player and a dancer with the Boston Ballet. (A movie which, ironically, is just now going into production.) So I was spending time hanging around with the Larry Bird-era Celtics and the Boston Ballet. Bob, a true Renaissance man, was into both.
Bob came with me to Hellenic College, a Greek Orthodox College outside Boston, where the Celtics had set up their practice facility. He also went with me to the temporary practice studios the Ballet had set up in Newton while their Boston facilities were being renovated. We joked about which was worse. Bob's jump shot or my jeté.
We went to a couple of Celtics games together and one ballet. Bob went backstage after the ballet and greeted the dancers most of whom were Roger Rabbit fans and were thrilled to meet him.
Bob was a kind, gracious, funny, unpretentious, and altogether wonderful human being. The most down-to-Earth movie star I have ever met.
On his last day in Boston, as a going away gift, I gave Bob a Henley Roger Rabbit shirt like this one.
So long, Bob. You were, are, and always will be my Eddie Valiant.
